Dr. Sue Johnson

When conflict keeps repeating or emotional distance grows, it can feel painful and confusing — especially when love is still there. Many couples struggle to stay connected while navigating cultural differences, family expectations, attachment injuries, and major life transitions. You may find yourselves caught in cycles of misunderstanding, disconnection, or hurt, unsure how to repair what’s been impacted.
From an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) perspective, couples therapy focuses on strengthening emotional safety and secure attachment. Together, we slow down painful patterns, explore the underlying attachment needs driving conflict, and begin to heal relational wounds that have impacted trust and connection. I work from a culturally responsive, affirming approach, providing an inclusive space for LGBTQ+ couples and honoring each partner’s identity, lived experience, and relationship dynamics.
We also make space to understand how culture, identity, and intergenerational experiences shape your relationship. Through this process, couples learn to communicate more openly, respond to one another with greater empathy, and rebuild emotional closeness. My goal is to help you move from reactivity and distance toward understanding, security, and deeper connection.

Couples therapy is not about blame or “fixing” one partner — it’s about understanding the relationship itself. Through a compassionate, EFT-informed process, I help couples create new ways of relating that feel safer, more connected, and more supportive of both partners’ needs.
Couples therapy is available in San Diego and to California residents via teletherapy.
